Voyage #32: Northern Mindanao May 23 - June 8 This was the 32nd voyage, 8th trip to Siargao island and first exploration of the Pacific Coast of Mindanao for The King. The purpose of this voyage was to look for good surf breaks and safe anchorages in anticipation of the typhoon swells from August to October. We also wanted to investigate the diving, fishing and treking potential of Mindanao. From the Northern tip of Mindanao to Lianga Bay (220km) we observed steep mountains covered with dense jungle descending down to coconut grove fringed coastline. There were many small villages full of colorful fishing bancas evenly spaced in route. Not unlike other destinations in the Philippines the natives were curious and friendly. They seemed genuinely unaware of any NPA violence in the region but local newspaper reported otherwise (see article). We canceled our plans to trek inland, moved to a new anchorage every day and tried to keep a low profile in populated areas. The inshore waters are generally unproductive for trolling. Over fishing and other destructive practices have had a big impact on the reefs and has hurt the scuba diving potential of the area. A number of marine sanctuaries have been established and there may be some spots worth diving that we didn't have the time to explore. 'Huge potential' is the best way to describe the coast of Mindanao for surfing. There are several areas of particular interest: 1) Reef breaks around Auqui island, 2) Beach breaks in Lanuza bay, 3) Beach breaks around Tandag, 4) Point breaks around Bayabas and Cagwait. We had great weather for the entire cruise and only one small bit of bad luck. Another great voyage. Enjoy the pictures!
